New DPhil scholarship in Schubert studies (2026/27 entry)

The Faculty of Music at the University of Oxford is pleased to announce a new doctoral scholarship, enabled by the generosity of Dr Nigel Nettheim, for students starting in the academic year 2026/27. Proposed doctoral projects should be concerned with the analysis of the compositions of Franz Schubert (1797-1828). The compositions of Schubert's circle and models, and other composers more generally, can be included, provided this relates to the understanding of Schubert's scores.

The scholarship covers home course fees and an annual grant for living costs of at least £22,027, for three years. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to Wadham College in order to take up the scholarship.

The application process follows the Oxford system and deadlines, which are outlined here: https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate/fees-and-funding/funding/scholarships

The deadline for applications is midday UK time on Wednesday 7 January 2026.

Prospective applicants are welcome to contact the Chair of Faculty Board, Professor Laura Tunbridge (laura.tunbridge@music.ox.ac.uk), for further information.
