Outreach

bate education

Academics and students of the Music Faculty lead a range of music outreach projects every year.

If you are a prospective applicant, or are supporting a prospective applicant, and would like to know more about our widening participation initiatives, see Increasing Access.

Undergraduate students can choose to take Community Music and Music Education as a final-year paper. The course explores the role of music in education, health and community settings, combining academic study with practical outreach experience. Students undertake placements with schools, charities and community organisations, working with a wide range of participants. Recent projects have included school outreach initiatives, community ensembles, programmes for people living with dementia, autistic young people, vulnerable children, and people in prison. Through these experiences, students develop their understanding of how music can support learning, wellbeing, inclusion and social change.

The Bate Collection of Musical Instruments offers workshops for school and community groups. These interactive workshops include Javanese gamelan, Tudor Music (Key Stage 2) and Music through the Ages.

The OUMS student Access and Outreach Officers plan and deliver outreach events throughout the academic year. Their recent programme includes performing in care homes and at The Gatehouse community drop-in centre.
