Congratulations to Dr Oliver Chandler, Senior College Lecturer in Music at Keble College and Stipendiary Lecturer in Music & Organising Tutor at Hertford College, who has won the inaugural Adele Katz Early Career Researcher Award, established by the Society for Music Analysis in 2023-24. This award honours early career researchers who have made significant contributions to music analysis.

Dr Chandler, who is also an academic professor at the Royal College of Music, was recognized for his work in late 19th- and 20th-century tonality and twentieth-century guitar repertoire. He has published in journals such as Music & Letters, Music Theory Online, and Music Theory & Analysis and his monograph entitled A Twelve-Tone repertory for Guitar: Julian Bream and the British Serialists, 1956-1983, in the series Guitar Foundation of America Refereed Monograph Series was published in 2023. This year Dr Chandler published his second book, Return to Riemann: Tonal Function and Chromatic Music.

The Society for Music Analysis also recognised Dr Chandler for his dedication to organising conferences, symposia, and other events that promote music theory and analysis.

Remembering John Whenham

The Faculty of Music is sorry to learn of the passing of alumnus Professor John Whenham (New College, 1968). Following completion of his DPhil at Oxford, Professor Whenham went on to spend over 40 years at the University of Birmingham. The University of Birmingham has published an obituary celebrating his life and career.
